Disconnected Craze

5/23/2011
Lorinda’s Salon Spa Store lives on the cutting edge, consistently participating in training and advanced education to learn the newest trends, techniques, and product technologies.

May 23rd, 2011—the salon team drives to work on their day off, excited and ready to dive into Bumble & Bumble product knowledge. Led by Bumble & Bumble Network Educator and Lorinda’s very own designer stylist, Kelsey, this class provided a creative team with knowledge they could mold into their own style.

Using her leadership and excitement, Kelsey began by leading the team through a haircut project—a project breaking the rules of traditional haircutting and bringing the team together to create one cohesive, trend-setting haircut.

A mannequin with long hair was the model. Each stylist chose their cutting tool of choice. Stylists had everything from a razor to texture shears in hand. Then, the team went in turns taking a section of the mannequin’s hair and cutting it however they liked.

The end result: “Disconnected Craze.”

It began with Kelsey taking vertical partings, over-directing it just past the corner of the eye with her razor. Next up was 25-year Lorinda’s veteran, Sandy. With her texture shears, Sandy cut a short to long side-bang, over-directed up and over the head, parted in front of the ear. Tiffany, a 15-year veteran, created a rooster tail by using her razor to cut a spiked V-section in the crown. LeeAnn, the salon manager, over-directed the mannequin’s hair straight up with her razor. Rachael, Lorinda’s Sebastian Advocate, over-directed the front side forward with her razor and created texture. Kayte squared off the perimeter on the left side with her shears. Stephanie did a slide-cut to create a V-shaped tail on the right side. The owner, Lorinda, added layering to the top with her texture shears.

The team styled the model using Bumble & Bumble products and the knowledge gained from Kelsey’s product knowledge class.

And of course, the model loves her new cutting-edge style!

Joey-Growing Hair to Donate to Charity

4/15/2011

Some may wonder why Joey’s hair is growing, some may not care. Regardless, I encourage all to read this inspiring story about family, love and hope.

Her name is Nicolle Williams. She is Joey’s cousin, although much more like a sister to him than an extended relative. They lived, laughed and grew together. They have had many fun times together throughout the years, even getting on each others’ nerves as young kids typically do. Nicolle is quick to smile, loves animals, and is an amazing artist with a positive soul. Laughter is always in the cards in her presence.

Unfortunately, Nicolle found a lump in her breast and went to the doctor to discover she had breast cancer. She received a double mastectomy and all went well. After her mastectomy, Nicolle returned to the doctor to talk about the reconstruction process only to find out the cancer had spread. Nicolle was devastated but determined to do everything in her power to fight it head on. Her first challenge was getting all the treatments. They left her very sick and she lost her hair. In October of 2008, Joey decided to grow his hair out in her name to donate to Locks of Love—a company that makes wigs for children with cancer. Nicolle’s second challenge was finding medical grants and other ways to pay for her treatments, as she no longer had health insurance because of the inability to work throughout this process. Every day she had the energy, Nicolle searched for funding for her treatments with grace and concern for people whom after her would have the same struggles.

February 7th through the 9th of 2010, Joey stayed with Nicolle in her home. Those few days were life changing. Joey knew Nicolle was struggling, and knew that if it were he in that predicament that Nicolle would be there for him.

Nicolle lost her battle on February 27th, 2010. Joey can still remember their last hug, and he holds all the memories with his cousin close to his heart. He had hoped Nicolle would get to see his hair donation through to fruition, but knows she is keeping a good eye on his goal, singing with the angels.

Brocato Cutting and Color Class

3/14/2011
Staying on the cutting edge of the fashion industry means continually attending advanced education opportunities. Earlier this year, the Lorinda’s Team received hands-on personal training at Lorinda’s Salon, Spa & Store from Brocato Educator Mike Kowalis on Advanced Brocato Color and Cutting.

Having an educator come into Lorinda’s Salon for educational events provides Lorinda’s Team with the incredible opportunity to have extremely personal training in a salon environment they are comfortable with. The team performed the coloring techniques learned using the new Brocato color line on live models, introducing our stylists to real life options on how to use the color and techniques.

This two day Advanced Brocato Color and Cutting Class took place on March 13th and March 14th, 2011. The team received outstanding hands on education, and had the opportunity to practice what they learned with guidance from Educator Mike Kowalis. Lorinda’s is constantly participating in fun, educational events such as this two day workshop, and the team looks forward to the next training session.

Lorinda's Team Members approved by WSCAP

3/13/2011

Lorinda’s Salon, Spa & Store is an approved salon for the Washington State Cosmetology Apprenticeship Program (WSCAP). This program provides an alternative learning experience for those who cannot attend traditional training programs for cosmetology students. Apprenticeships in the program work one on one with a Journeyman as a paid employee at approved salon or spa environments.
Lorinda’s Salon, Spa & Store is honored to have Artistic Designers Sandy Bronn with more than 25 years of experience and Tiffany Dietz with more than 17 years of experience work as employees, advanced educators and Journeymen at the salon. Sandy and Tiffany’s expertise in training and education through years of work and advanced education provide the salon and WSCAP with exceptional curriculum development. Apprentices work one on one with either Sandy or Tiffany, receiving rigorous hands-on training, providing them with a learning opportunity unlike any other.

WSCAP-Lori and LeeAnn are Licensed Cosmetologists

3/11/2011

The Washington State Cosmetology Apprenticeship Program (WSCAP) provides cosmetology students with a unique learning experience. This program allows students who are unable to attend traditional training to receive rigorous, hands-on training in an approved salon with a Journeyman.
Lorinda Warner and LeeAnn Johnson participated in WSCAP at Lorinda’s Salon, Spa & Store and worked with Journeymen Sandy Bronn and Tiffany Dietz beginning in July of 2009. WSCAP requires greater hours—more than double the hours for traditional training—for receiving a license because of the alternative learning experience. With hard work and dedication to their education and to the salon, Lorinda and LeeAnn received their cosmetology license in December of 2010. They are licensed to perform any hair care services, facials, waxing, and nail care services.

New porduct from Moroccan Oil

3/11/2011

Moroccan Oil is a revolutionary product line that has continually provided superior products for hair care. It is known for its high shine, intense moisture, and reparative qualities. All Moroccan Oil products contain vitamins A through H, supplying the hair with nutrients it craves. In addition, these products are set apart with oil from the argon seed complimenting the other ingredients.
Moroccan Oil has produced two new additions to the family that offer variety to the original Intense Curl Cream. The first is Curl Control Cream, which contains an advanced technology that offers “intense conditioning and a curl memory factor that controls frizz for extended periods.” It enhances natural curls, allowing movement without losing the shape of the curl. The second development is Curl Defining Mousse. This product “tightens and defines natural waves and curls while sealing in moisture, eliminating frizz, and offering optimal hold.”
These products, as well as the entire Moroccan Oil product line, can be found at Lorinda’s Salon, Spa & Store nestled in the heart of Mill Creek, Washington.

Lorinda's Salon Continues to Educate

3/11/2011

Salon Services and Supply in Renton, Washington continually provides advanced education opportunities. The beauty industry is constantly evolving into greater realms of knowledge; therefore it is important to stay up to date on the latest trends and technologies. Lorinda’s Salon, Spa & Store in Mill Creek, WA utilizes these opportunities, sending team members to multiple educational events throughout each year.
In the last year, Lorinda’s has participated in five Dermalogica and IDI classes.
Owner Lorinda Warner, with team members LeeAnn Johnson and Tricia Soderblom, attended a Dermalogica Live educational event with instructor Anne Pennington—a Dermalogica representative for Salon Services and Supply—March 1st through March 2nd of 2010. This event focused on product knowledge for the professional skin care line, Dermalogica.
October 18th and 19th of 2010, Lorinda returned to Salon Services and Supply for an Advanced Facial and Massage course, enhancing her expertise in those fields.
IDI instructor Hannah Vaughn flew up from sunny California for an IDI International Skin Care Technologies class November 15th through the 17th of 2010. Lorinda and LeeAnn learned cutting edge techniques to performing facials at this three day course held at Salon Services and Supply.
Lorinda and LeeAnn attended advanced training once again on December 29th, 2010. This Treatment, Tools, and Technology one day class focused on the use of electrical modalities for performing facials with Dermalogica skin care products. They learned how to perform Galvanic Current spa treatments, which either pushes or pulls product into the skin to enhance the performance of Dermalogica skin care products. Lorinda and LeeAnn were also educated on High Frequency treatments—which purify and promote healing of acneic skin—and the use of electrical brushes—which assist in exfoliation. This class was taught by Dermalogica representative Marci Christopherson.
Most recently, LeeAnn attended the IDI Galvanic and High Frequency Treatments instructed by IDI representative Mia Holm on March 6th, 2011. Mia flew up from California to tough the winter Washington weather to provide expertise on these treatments.

Advanced Foiling Class

3/11/2011

Beauty is a dynamic industry—continually improving and developing new techniques. Lorinda’s Salon, Spa & Store works towards staying up to date with these latest advancements in the beauty industry by frequently attending innovative classes and events.

Lorinda's Team Member serves on Board of Directors

3/11/2011

The Washington State Cosmetology Apprenticeship Program (or WSCAP) began as a program for advanced education for licensed cosmetology professionals. WSCAP has grown into a rigorous, hands-on learning opportunity for cosmetology students, providing them with an experience unlike any other. This program now allows cosmetology students to receive hands-on training in an approved salon or spa environment as an employee with pay and benefits. WSCAP is state regulated by the Department of Licensing and Labor and Industries, and as such this program requires more hours than traditional training—more than double.
Lorinda’s Salon, Spa & Store’s very own Artistic Designer, Tiffany Dietz, is on the Board of Directors for WSCAP. Tiffany provides her expertise in training and education to help decision making for the Rules and Regulations of WSCAP. Her years of work in the salon industry and curriculum development contribute to her proficiency in developing rules and regulations for this unique learning opportunity.

Brocato Academy - New York, NY

10/15/2010
Lorinda’s Salon, Spa & Store is committed to engaging creative experiences where guests feel beautiful and valued by working together to exceed expectations in anticipation of the next visit. Holding true to this statement means continually refining the salon’s teams’ skills through education held by national and international stylists and stage artists.
September 19th, 2010, owner Lorinda Warner did just that by sending herself and Artistic Designer Sandy Bronn (a Lorinda’s team member for over 20 years) to New York to attend a Brocato training workshop held by founder Sam Brocato himself. This workshop focused on modern razor cutting and unique cutting techniques for haircuts.
Working with Sam Brocato directly made this training in particular innovating and cutting edge. Lori said it was “an incredible experience” and that Sam’s approach had “amazing individualized instruction” for each stylist attending his workshop. Learning from the best directly was extremely beneficial, and “meeting and being in [Sam’s] salon” was a wonderful opportunity for Sandy.
Lori and Sandy brought inspiration and excellence to Lorinda’s Salon, Spa & Store from the Brocato training workshop in New York. The salon welcomes these stylists home and eagerly anticipates sending more team members to rigorous and extraordinary advanced education workshops in the near future.

Anniversary Sales & Give-Aways!

10/15/2010
This past year has been monumental in the history of Lorinda’s Salon, Spa & Store. We were voted the BEST Hair Salon in Western Washington on King 5’s Evening Magazine, our commitment to advanced education has been magnified through our team attending numerous seminars and workshops, and it is now our 26th anniversary.
Rather than bragging about how much we love all our guests throughout our 26 years in business, we thought we’d show our appreciation instead through massive savings and sweet give-aways!
Just like our customers undeniable support, Brocato’s VibraColor Versa-Fix spray gel gives hold to your style while locking in your unique hair color. If spray-gel isn’t your style, choose between a VibraColor gift box or Cloud 9 Miracle Repair gift box. Choose any one of these three gifts, PLUS get a Brocato Swell Volume bag, all with a purchase in Brocato of $26.00 or more.
Don’t need any products? Then enjoy a service at an incredible price. Treat your toes for just $26.00 when you schedule a pedicure with any other service! Hurry and reserve an appointment; this offer ends October 30th and scheduling is limited.
These sales are a thank you to YOU, our guests, for being so loyal and fun throughout our 26 years in business. We encourage you to introduce your friends to Lorinda’s as well (don’t forget about our Referral Rewards that give you $25.00 OFF your next visit for each friend you send in, PLUS that friends’ first cut is just $25.00 with any stylist!), the only catch is that your friends have to be as fun as you!
Feel free to give us a call at (425)743-9722.

5/26/2010
This Network Educator program focused on developing the skills to motivate and teach other stylists. There were four main categories that were discussed: Speaking and Teaching, Product Mastery, Communication and The Bumble & Bumble Relationship. Hands-on workshops and lectures provided outstanding opportunities to expand knowledge on leadership and styling.

“This opportunity will allow me to motivate and inspire my team members to approach hairstyling with a new perspective,” explains Smokoff.

Lorinda’s Salon, Spa & Store is committed to remaining on the cutting edge of their industry. The entire team takes great pride in keeping their skills up to date by attending continuing advanced education. Local Salon donates recycled hair clippings to oil spill clean-up efforts

5/26/2010
Many are familiar with the recent and ongoing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. This BP oil leak is expounding about 210,000 gallons of oil per day, meaning if it continues at this rate it will bypass the Exxon oil spill by Father’s Day. A study discovered recycled hair clippings made into “booms” attract the oil out of the water. These homemade recycled “booms” are dragged across the surface of the water in the Gulf in attempts to clean up oil.
In an effort to help as much as possible, Lorinda’s Salon Spa & Store is recycling all of their hair clippings. They began collecting hair in May, and are excited to see how much they can donate to this cause.
To donate your hair to this cause, schedule a haircut at Lorinda’s! It doesn’t matter if you plan to get a bunch cut off, or just a tiny trim—every bit of hair clippings help.
Lorinda’s is making it easy for the community to donate their hair by offering dramatic savings. Any new guests and guests who have not been into Lorinda’s in a year or more will receive a haircut for only $25.00 when they mention this article upon scheduling.

This two day work shop focused on refining classic techniques developed by Bumble & Bumble, which form the basis for any cut. Other skills that were touched on included consultation techniques, advanced razor cutting, product knowledge, and styling.

“This class was an amazing opportunity to further my education in an ever-changing industry. I had an awesome time and am excited to bring home what I learned,” Soderblom says of her experience.

Lorinda’s Salon, Spa & Store is committed to remaining on the cutting edge of the industry. The entire team takes great pride in keeping their skills up to date by attending continuing advanced education. It is an honor to welcome Tricia home from this Bumble & Bumble training event.

Making Dreams Come True

9/26/2009
At Lorinda’s Salon, Spa and Store we believe that the best part of our job is making dreams come true for others. That’s why we’re helping Zach get to Portugal next month.

Zach Lipana is a 17-year-old dirt bike racer from Woodinville. Zach’s enjoyed a pretty impressive career, and has been invited to represent the United States in the International Six Days Enduro race next month in Figueira da Foz, Portugal. Zach has a dream, and we want to help.

Aside from all the hard work and dedication, Zach’s dream comes with a $20,000 price, and we want to help take the cost of realizing his dream out of the equation. The team at Lorinda’s Salon, Spa and Store is committed to helping Zach represent our country and realize his dream. And we want to give you the opportunity to help, too.

We’re accepting donations at Lorinda’s Salon, Spa and Store to help Zach realize his dream next month. In addition, you can purchase a Zach Lipana shirt by emailing Anne Lipana at annekdx200@yahoo.com. Proceeds from the sale of these shirts will help offset Zach’s expenses. You can also send “good thoughts” to this email address that are simply words of encouragement that he can read during the six-day endurance event.

For more information on Zach and his incredible opportunity, visit http://www.amateamusa.com

Thanks to each of you for helping Zach realize his dream.

Local Salon and Spa Owner to Provide National-Level Industry Training

4/14/2009
For immediate release: April 14, 2009
For more information, please contact: Lorinda Warner (425) 743-9722

Mill Creek, WA.- Lorinda Warner, owner of Lorinda’s Salon, Spa and Store provided a three-day salon-industry seminar at the Salon Services Academy in Renton, Washington. Salon Manager and Massage Therapist LeeAnn Johnson of Lorinda’s Salon, Spa and Store was also an attendee.

The seminar, called Strategies Business Series 4.0, is the first in a four-part series of graduate-level Strategies courses. The training was held April 5-7 at the Salon Services Corporate Training Theatre. Warner has served as the Director of Education for Strategies since 2007.

The three-day seminar focused on a leadership mantra, “no compromise” that Strategies founder Neil Ducoff first articulated over ten years ago while teaching The Strategies Incubator. Since then, “no-compromise leadership” has evolved into a revered business philosophy and a best-selling business book. In Strategies Business Series 4.0 Warner presents the most in-depth exploration of the thinking and behaviors that drive the four business outcomes as the “no-compromise leadership” philosophy is unveiled.

This seminar is unique in that it focuses squarely on the thinking and behaviors that drive each of the four business outcomes. This approach not only targets the systems themselves, but also challenges salon owners and managers as no-compromise leaders to ensure that constant momentum never wavers.

“This first seminar out of the four-part series focuses on productivity. I press the attendees to take a hard look at how they operate and manage their businesses in an effort to help them break through productivity barriers. It is a very exciting and insightful process, and I’m honored to play a role in guiding their success,” explained Warner.

Warner is the owner of Lorinda’s Salon, Store and Spa in Mill Creek, Washington. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the business, and Warner has applied the concepts and methodologies provided by Strategies to achieve industry-recognized success.
